Dear All,

The concept of student agency (your child’s responsibility for their learning) is extremely powerful and is something we use extensively across the school.  Every time you receive a link to your child’s online report it creates an opportunity for you to talk with your child about their learning. The work samples shared as part of the report create an opportunity for you to see what the children have achieved and also serve as a prompt for them to talk about their successes and next steps in learning.  On 23rd and 24th March the children will invite you in to share their learning with you in school during our Student Led Conferences.  More details regarding the sign up for these will be in next week’s newsletter.

In this changing weather please make sure that your children’s clothing is clearly labelled.  The layers that are necessary at the start of the day slowly get peeled off leaving a trail of potential lost property around the school if items are not named.

Congratulations go to our basketball team this week who were crowned RCHK Mixed Basketball Cup Champions on Friday. Each member of the team played superbly and remained unbeaten throughout the entire competition. We are all extremely proud!

WE NEED YOUR HELP:

Over the last few weeks we have outlined several ways you can help us out. To recap:

  • We desperately need as many people as possible to help out during the school fair – the more people who volunteer the less time each person is required to help! https://goo.gl/forms/FM3d4nINl8GMmyFp1

  • Raffle tickets are already being sold and we are very impressed by the students’ motivation! There are prizes for the girl, the boy and the class who sell the most tickets. Please contact the PTA office should you need more raffle tickets to sell!

  • We are looking for donations of unwanted gifts, new or quality second hand household items for the White Elephant Stall. These could be toys, household items and appliances, bikes, CDs, DVDs, puzzles or board games! Please be mindful that we are not able to sell pirated copies of CDs or DVDs.

  • We haved formed a Community Choir for staff and parents, and will be performing a simple, popular song during the fair.   If you would like to join us, rehearsals will be at 5pm-7pm on Thursday 9 and 16 March, 2017.  Please let the PTA know if you are planning to join us.

  • The PTA are collecting cash donations to help purchase items for the auction. If you are willing to donate money, please contact the PTA office. Thank you for those who have already donated.

  • We would love any donations of outdoor/garden furniture, natural rope, bamboo, indoor/outdoor plants and pots, wood offcuts and wooden pallets for the Sky Garden.

STUDENT ACTION

Sophia was motivated by the Well Being theme in Y2 this term – and by her trek-loving Mum! She spent the CNY holidays exploring some of the trails around Hong Kong including the Dragon’s Back, Shing Mun Country Park and, most recently, High Junk Peak which is considered one of the most slippery / treacherous slopes in Hong Kong! Sophia says she enjoys hiking as she loves listening to the sounds of nature and taking on new, fun challenges. This year, she wants to attempt a hike or race event with her Mum. Sophia I love that your learning has inspired this action – I hope it inspires others to explore Hong Kong too!

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Lawrence attended the Saracens Kuala Lumpur Rugby Tournament and scored 3 tries over the competition. His team, the HKFC under 6s, went on to win the Bowl Final including a try from Lawrence. It is great to hear that you are already in training for the KJS Rugby Team,  Lawrence – keep up the great work!

At the weekend Aiden and Gemma (Y2) participated at a SOMOS International School Workshop, enjoying the exciting opportunity to build and program a robot! I hear that they both did a fabulous job working collaboratively with a team mate on their task to build a robit that moved and stopped at a specific distance. They worked through by trial and error, demonstrating commendable commitment and resilience even though the programming expections were beyond their age expectations. Very well done to both of you.

Well done to Dhriti for winning first prize in a painting competition organized by the Indian Arts Circle and India Club Hong Kong. While talking with her Mum I found out that Dhriti represented Hong Kong in the 2nd Chinmaya International Geeta Chanting competition conducted by Chinmaya Mission held in Dec 2015 at Pune, India.

Dhriti was the first runner up amongst 200+ contestants and 92 finalists in Hong Kong. She was chosen to compete against the top 10 contestants from 11 countries across the world. What an incredible opportunity and accomplishment – I’m so pleased I heard about it!
