KJS Principal Appointment

A reminder that the four shortlisted candidates will be in school as part of the final selection process for Principal next week.  On Wednesday they will be interviewed by a variety of different stakeholder panels and, at 5.00pm they will each make a 20 mins presentation to the wider school community in the school hall followed by a 10 mins question and answer session.  A short written profile of each candidate will be provided at the start of the evening.  You are most welcome to attend these presentations if you would like to participate in the selection process.   To enable us to manage numbers please sign up on https://goo.gl/forms/JhAUAJfu9tYqPHJC2.  We expect them to be concluded at 7.00pm.   You will be able to give feedback on the presentations until 7.00am the next morning.  On Thursday 23rd March the final formal interviews will take place in ESF Centre and we hope that an announcement will be possible before the end of term.   Many thanks for your continuing support through this vital process.

Best wishes

Dr Ed Wickins

Executive Principal of the ESF Kowloon Learning Campus

Dear All,

What a fabulous week for KJS – with Maths at the top of the agenda at the start of the week we all enjoyed seeing the students exploring Maths in a variety of wonderful ways – working at KGV and JCSR School, embracing Maths challenges, creating Maths videos, designing Maths games, baking for ‘Pi Day’ and dressing up in all sorts of fabulous mathematically themed ways it was an enormously fun way to the promote the joy of mathematics across the school. I would like to extend our thanks to all parents who were able to support their children with the home based tasks and of course to Mr Anderson for organizing everything for us.

On Friday evening our seventy strong choir joined nearly seven hundred other students from across ESF to perform in the Primary Choral Concert. Celebrating the Foundation’s fiftieth year, the concert, held at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium, looked and sounded incredible. Thank you to Mr Davenport,  Mrs Mak and all the children for the many hours of hard work that they put in in order to make the evening such a success.

At the end of the week was, of course, the school fair. Every year this event gives me great joy but also a slight sense of panic when I wonder if it can ever reach the same standard the next year. Thanks to the incredible dedication and drive of William, Saloni,  Sheila and the PTA committee, this year’s fair yet again raised the bar, providing an amazing five hours of fun, food and festivities for more than a thousand people! Particular thanks must also go to Luke, Melanie, Mel, Suzanne, Rochelle,  Avisha, Pooja, Jay, John, Carrie, Ana, Sarah, Ryoko, Young Sook, Jocelyn, Jade and Lizzie for putting in so many hours.  On the day we had more than 200 volunteers helping on over 40 stalls – a true testament to our wonderful community. Parents, teachers and students from KJS, KGV and Jockey Club Sarah Roe School came out in force to support us.  May I thank everyone who donated prizes, performed, provided delicious food, bought raffle tickets, sang with us, gave their time and/or came along on the day.  It was KJS at its best – a day to remember.

On Thursday evening and all day Friday we will be holding Student Led Conferences. The children will be talking you through their learning and sharing their work with you.  It is a time when teachers take a back seat and let the students lead – this is key to the concept of learner agency.  In order to support your child the following three simple questions can be used to keep the conversation flowing:

  • Tell me about your learning.
  • What did you well?
  • How have you/do you need to improve(d) in this area?

The children may also talk to you about the skills and dispositions they have been working on. In each year group and specialist area there will be a sample of relevant learning experiences for you to work through with your child. These are designed to give you a flavour of the types of learning they have been experiencing this year.

In order to keep the flow of people manageable we ask you to start your student led conference in your child’s classroom before moving to the Mandarin, Music and PE areas.  Y3 – 6 students are also asked to go to the 4th floor media area to share their learning technology work with you.  Please be sure to attend all areas of the school to promote our message that the specialist subjects are extremely important to your child’s education.

Please remember that there are no classes on Friday.

Photographs of Maths Week, the Primary Choral Concert and the School Fair can be found on the KJS Facebook page – please ‘follow’ us to enjoy daily updates from in and around school.

Wishing you a wonderful week – and hoping to see you all at the presentations on Wednesday at 5pm.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Anushri and Harshitha performed their Rajasthani folk dance for both RTHK’s International Children Carnival show and UNESCO’s 5th Peacemakers’ Cultural Celebration last month. What a wonderful way to showcase their wonderful performance!

STUDENT ACTION

Jacob (2M) completed the UNICEF charity run last Sunday. For the past three years, Jacob has taken part in this charity run, raising funds to help provide life-saving treatment for children living with HIV. There were difficult times within the long distance run but with sheer determination and a never-give-up spirit, Jacob was able to accomplish a 3km run in less than half an hour. This year he even beat his personal best and completed the race in 26m 36s. He was happy with the result, and more importantly, he enjoyed running with his family and supporting the cause by UNICEF. Thank you Jacob for inspiring us all.
