ESF SPORTS AND LANGUAGE SPRING CAMPS 2

BAKING CLASSES – TERM 3 3

DATES FOR YOUR DAIRY 4

Dear All,

The school was buzzing last week with the Student Led Conferences and we were extremely proud of the children's ability to articulate their learning to you.  Tonight we have the music concert and tomorrow the Y1 and Y2 Sports Day so a very busy last week before we start the Easter holidays at 12 noon on Friday. This week Tuesday and Wednesday clubs will run as usual unless already notified by the club provider.  The following school run clubs will NOT be running on Thursday or Friday this week:

  • Thursday Rugby 3-4pm at Kings Park

  • Thursday Netball 3- 4pm

  • Friday Basketball 3-4pm

  • Friday Football 3-4pm

Information regarding next term's clubs will be sent out later this week.

Over the past two weeks, the KJS Library has been fortunate to host two amazing authors.  On Tuesday, March 14th, artist and poet Chris White presented some of his hysterical poems to Year 1s.  Later the same day, he guided the Year 2s and 4s through creating their own cartoon pet mashup and a wacky poem to go with it.  On Wednesday, March 22nd, author and mathematician David M. Schwartz presented to Years 3, 5 and 6.  While there were still plenty of laughs, this time the focus was on math and understanding 'big numbers'.  If you missed the opportunity to purchase Chris White's books or would like to purchase David M. Schwartz's books, you can find them at www.bookdepository.com 5 .

May I take this opportunity to wish you all a wonderful holiday. I look forward to seeing all the children back in school on 18th     April.

Warmest regards.

Karen Thomas

Head of School

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

KJS hosted the Under 10s ESF Basketball Academy this weeked. The KJS PTA kindly organized lunch, fruit and drinks for the eight team tournament in the gym. KJS players were involved in four teams – three of which were mixed with other schools. Antony, Aishaan, Shaan, Akshaan, Vian, Praneel and Ishan were our representatives.

The final was like a NBA final with KJS Tigers A playing against West Island Tigers. Vian, Praneel and Ishan played their way into second place with Ishan winning Most Valuable Player! Great job everyone!

Some of you may remember me writing about student achivement in ‘Go' last year. Go is a board game for two players that originated in China 2,500 years ago. Particularly popular in North-Eastern Asian Countries like Japan, Korea and China. It is now promoted globally around the world with hundreds of Go Clubs in Europe and America. I was interested to note that it is the only remaining board game that computer Artificial Intelligence (AI) is trying to crack (with recent breakthrough by AlphaGo from Google - Challenge games with current World #1 human player is scheduled in Apr 2017)!

Rodney (Y4) started learning the Go game less than 3 years ago at the age of five and a half. He has shown great potential in this game with outstanding performances in competitions. Playing amongst older children as well as adults who have played the game for decades, he has already accumulated many trophies and medals.

In a recent competition Rodney was second runner up in the strong amateur's group and obtained the certificate of 3-Dan, which usually takes a talented child five to ten years to achieve - or many adults even a life time hoping to reach! Well done Rodney!
