Yr1 Curriculum Update – 13/10/17

Working together to achieve success for every child

Greetings! – It’s our 4th edition!

Each week we will write a newsletter keeping you up-to-date and informed about your child’s learning. This will provide you with a good understanding of happenings in Year 1 and how you can support these learning experiences.

Transdisciplinary Learning – It’s all connected!

This week, the students have started to inquire into the central idea, ‘People explore to understand the world’. Year 1 provocation activities (e.g. water, magnets, etc) have provided the students with a variety of exploration opportunities to use their senses, finding out more about the world around them. These learning engagements have supported the development of students’ curiosity to question, explore and wonder, introducing them to the tools and strategies to pursue their own interests and passions.

Digital Literacy: Y1 students using IPADs to take photographs as provocations for their own writing experiences.

Within language, students are starting to write informally about their own ideas, experiences and feelings using simple repetitive sentence structures (e.g. I like, I can). Parallel to this, digital literacy (e.g. IPADs, laptops & interactive whiteboards) and pattern texts continue to support the development of students’ phonological awareness and reading skills daily, through rhyme and song. Meanwhile in Maths, students learning has centred around copying, extending, creating and describing patterns with objects and drawings.

Would you still like to help in Year 1?

Next week Year 1 classes open their doors to parent volunteers seeking to support the students learning. Please contact your child’s class teacher if you would like to provide assistance.

Kindest regards, The Year 1 Team
