Yr1 Curriculum Update – 20/04/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Greetings! – It’s our 16th edition!

We write a regular newsletter keeping you up-to-date and informed about your child’s learning. This will provide you with a good understanding of happenings in Year 1 and how you can support these learning experiences.

Let’s Inquire – Sharing the Planet

This week, the students have continued to inquire into the central idea, ‘People’s choices can help or hurt the Earth.’  Personal inquiry time has provided students with plentiful learning opportunities to question, explore and reflect, supporting their understanding of how choices can positively and negatively impact the planet. Consequently, students are starting to develop a deeper awareness of the need to accept responsibility with regards to the 6Rs (i.e. reduce, reuse, recycle, refuse, repair & rot) through initiatives like Earth Day, attempting to end plastic pollution.

Within language, students have created non-fiction posters to raise awareness of the need to end plastic pollution in Year 1 and select appropriate courses of action to solve the problem. Experimentation through colour, shape and font has enabled students to communicate their message effectively and develop their writing skills. Meanwhile in math, students continue to estimate, compare, describe and measure the lengths, heights, capacities and mass of different objects using non-standard units such as blocks, paper clips and beads.
