Working together to achieve success for every child

Greetings! – It’s our 7th edition!

Every 2 weeks we will write a newsletter keeping you up-to-date and informed about your child’s learning. This will provide you with a good understanding of happenings in Year 1 and how you can support these learning experiences.

Transdisciplinary Learning – It’s all connected!

The students continue to explore imagination and storytelling.  They have been using their imaginations to create different play scenarios and play stories.  Using a variety of open-ended materials such as boxes, sticks and materials, the students have explored their creativity with friends.  By taking away toys such as trains, cars, dolls, we hope to enable to students to use their imagination to create their own stories, characters and settings independently.  They have spent time acting and miming everyday activities (walking the dog, making dinner, driving a car) which gave them the experience of “let’s pretend” play.  The students have started to investigate the structure of stories, looking at character, settings and the plot.

Within Maths, the students have been exploring the concept of more and less.  They have compared numbers and amounts through a variety of games and activities.  They continue to record numbers in a variety of ways, think about their position in the number system and start to apply place value.  Meanwhile, in Language, the students continue to explore pattern writing and children’s stories.  They are starting to explore different ways that stories are told – books, cartoons, plays etc.  They were able to experience first hand a production with our visit to watch the school production of “Madagascar”.   The children were then able to take part in a discussion about what was similar and what was different between the stage show and the cartoon.
