Yr1 Weekly Update – 05/19/17

People’s choices can help or hurt the Earth

Unit of Inquiry

We continue to explore the negative effects our actions have on the planet.  We have looked at the impact of plastic in our oceans and deforestation.  We continue to focus on the cause and effect relationship and look for action that we can take to create a positive impact or solution.  We have been horrified to discover what is happening to the world’s rainforests.  Next week we will start to carry out our summative assessment which is to look for a problem and create a solution to it or design a product that will help to stop a problem.  We took part in the school wide waste collection on Wednesday and Thursday this week, as our waste is calculated to see how much is generated.

Questions: What is waste? Where does waste come from? What do we do with waste? What goes into the rubbish? Why is it rubbish? How is rubbish disposed of? How does waste get into the ocean?  What happens when it gets there?  How can we stop this?  What can we do to help?  What is deforestation?  What happens and why?  Are there any ways we could help to stop deforestation?

Literacy

We continue to explore phonics in class through a variety of games, direct instruction and reading.

We have been using our writing knowledge to start to inquire into explanation writing.  We have looked at plastic and paper so far.  We need to remember to include a title and provide important information about our topic.  Writing in full sentences has been challenging at times but we are trying to persevere and not give up when things are tough!

Maths

This week we have started to explore the concepts of addition and subtraction.  We started looking at these through numberless word problems.  We discussed words such as: more, few, lots and less.  We generated lots of different words that could be used in place of these words.  We looked at word problems that did not have number values and had to use clues in the text to work out what kind of number should go in each missing space.  Then we worked by ourselves using different strategies to work out the answer.  We recorded all the different ways we could do the same question.

Suggested activities: Encourage your child to use the language of maths that we have started to investigate; more, most, less, least, few, lots etc.  Get them to try to use a variety of language when they are describing amounts.

Questions:  Which has the most/least?  Why does it have more/less?  Can you prove it to me?

KJS Action Day

On Thursday, 25th May the Year 6 children will hold an action day related to the action element of their PYP Exhibition.  On that day, children can come to school in their own clothes.  If they choose to do so they are requested to pay $20 for this privilege.

At play and lunch time, the Y6 students will be holding cake sales, games and other fun things to raise money for their chosen charity or organisation.  If you would like your child to take part, please give them a small amount that they can spend (not more than $20).
