Yr1 Weekly Update – 06/02/17

Scientists observe and classify in order to understand more about living things.

Unit of Inquiry

This is wee we have started our final inquiry of Year 1 “How the world works”.  In this inquiry we will be looking at the classification of living things.  On Thursday, Jurassic Garage brought in a variety of different animals for us to look at, touch, hold and learn about.

We were extremely brave and have an amazing time!  In 1W we introduced our bearded dragon Fluffy to Spike another bearded dragon.  Spike showed us why these amazing creatures are called BEARDED dragons.

Talking points:  What is a living thing?  How can you tell if something is living or not living?

Literacy

We continue to explore phonics in class through a variety of games, direct instruction and reading.

We have started to look at a variety of non-fiction books linked to our inquiry, specifically about animals and animal classification.

Maths

We are continuing to explore addition and subtraction this week.  We have been investigating some of the different strategies that we can use when we are adding and subtracting.  We have looked at using our fingers and manipulatives (cubes or small toys).

Talking points:  Using the different language of addition and subtraction – add, plus, more, altogether, take away, subtract, minus, what is left?

Reminders

HATS, SUNSCREAN AND BUG SPRAY EVERY DAY!

Dentist visits

Dentist visits have begun this week and continue over the next few weeks.  On the day of your child’s visit they need to bring their toothbrush.  The dental booklet will be sent home at the end of the day.

BEACH CLEAN UP!  Monday, 5th June

Next Monday we will go for our trip to clean up the beach.  Please remember on that day:

  1. Packed lunch and snack. Please pack in reusable containers.  (Deli fresh will be cancelled)
  2. Water bottles (reusable ONLY! We are considering our waste and the impact it makes)
  3. Sunscreen and bug spray applied BEFORE coming to school
  4. HATS! This is essential as we will be outside for most of the day
  5. Wear PE uniform

BOOK WEEK  Monday 5th June – Friday 9th June

Wednesday and Thursday students will have the opportunity to visit the library and purchase books to take home.  If you would like your child to buy a book, please place $20-$50 inside a Ziplock bag in your child’s school diary with your child’s name and class clearly labelled on it. That way we can ensure any change can be given back to you and placed back in your child’s diary along with the books they have purchased.

Wednesday – 1J

Thursday – 1W, 1G, 1B and 1S

Friday June 9th, it will be Book Character Day. This means your child can dress up as their favorite book character (i.e Cinderella, Batman, the Hungry Caterpillar and so on).  If your child does not want to participate he/she should come to school in their regular school uniform.

Please keep in mind that whatever costume your child has decided to dress up as, he/she will still need to come to school in a costume that they are able to easily move around in (as some classes will have PE class on that day), wear sensible shoes and should be able to continue to use the toilet independently while they are in their costumes.

Book Character Parade at FRIDAY 9th JUNE at 8:45 for Y1, Y2, and Y3 if parents wish to attend.
