Yr1 Curriculum Update – 08/09/17

Working together to achieve success for every child

Following the feedback we have received via the online survey to parents and the discussions we have had as a staff, we will be providing the ‘Curriculum Update’ fortnightly on a Friday for 2017/18. This ensures we can share meaningful reflections with parents regarding the learning that has occurred over the last fortnight, signal upcoming events and activities and provide support for home school links

Transdisciplinary Learning – It’s all connected!

This week, the students have started their first unit, inquiring into the central idea, ‘Members of a successful community have roles and responsibilities’. Students been provided with opportunities to explore and reflect on the different types of communities they part of, identifying similarities and differences. Central to this inquiry has been defining the meaning of a community and their purpose. These learning experiences have led to some very exciting classroom discussions, encouraging the students to develop their thinking skills and make connections to other aspects of learning.

Subitising Activities:

These fun play-based math games help the students to estimate and instantly recognise small groups of items up to 10 without counting.

With language and math, for example, students have engaged in a variety of explorative and collaborative play-based activities to support the development of their social and organisational skills (e.g. co-operating through turn-taking, active listening, sharing, etc.). Consequently, students are starting to develop some important key vocabulary connected to the unit and are engaging in a variety literacy texts enabling them to develop their reading skills of how print, illustrations and photographs can be used to convey information. Meanwhile in Maths, students learning has focused on estimating numbers of objects up to 10 and counting items up to 20.

Please remember, if you have any concerns or questions in the first place contact your child’s teacher. We welcome feedback and we want to work with you to achieve success for every child.

Kindest regards,

The Year 1 Team
