Yr1 Weekly Update – 30/9/16

TD Theme:    How we organise ourselves

Central idea: To function as part of a community people take on different roles and responsibilities.

We have had a lot of courageous children this week due to Year One vaccinations. The teachers were so proud of how the children followed instructions from the nurse and put on a very brave face!

The shared area has also been an exciting point of discussion this week, as the children have been collecting ideas on the purpose of the shared area, allocating suggestions for the spaces, how they can use the shared area and what they would like to have in them.

Such ideas included, a dressing up area, construction and their own market place! This has helped the students understand how their year one space is organised and how people in a community can take on different roles and responsibilities.

So watch this space in the Year One Shared Area and get ready to see lots of beautiful changes that all come from the ideas of the year one students!

Maths

The children have become very confident in reading and writing numbers up to 100. They are creating think charts that show what they know about the place value of different numbers. The students have also been exploring venn diagrams as a transdisciplinary link to their unit, How We Organise Ourselves. We have been practising comparing and sorting various objects in the classroom and have been able to identify the criteria (how it was sorted) of these Venn diagrams as well.

Literacy

In literacy, the students are continuing to match letters to words they want to write and hearing the sounds in a word. Now the students are confident in recognizing rhyming words and are using this knowledge to spell words in their writing. Once again this has created a transdisciplinary link between their unit of inquiry and their writing, as they are able to write about various communities they belong to at school and at home.

Unit of Inquiry

This is the final week of our unit, How We Organise Ourselves and the students have been busy creating various communities they belong to using lego, playdough, drawing and blocks for their summative assessments!

Through this activity, the children are starting to develop discussions to explain what a community is, how communities are similar and different from each other and the roles and responsibilities people take on within these communities.

We have had very creative designs along with strong cooperation skills from groups of students working together! Some communities the children have made included police stations, car parks and a school just to name a few!

A few kind reminders to:

* Please do not bring any snacks or lunch that contains nuts. We have children at school who have severe nut allergies in year one and the other year levels. This includes nutella and peanut butter.

* Please notify the school office and the bus mother of any changes in your child’s going home schedule. It is important that both the school office and bus mother is informed. Teachers are unable to always get to their email at the end of the day, so please call as soon as you know of alternative home arrangements to be made with your child.

* Please label every item of clothing and belongings with your child’s name – including shoes and their school bags.

* Please remember to pack a school hat, a waterbottle and a snack every day, labeled with your child’s name. Your child should also have a snack box and water bottle that he/she can open by his/herself.
