Yr2 Curriculum Update – 01/06/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Welcome to our thirteenth edition!

In each update, the Year 2 Team will bring you snapshots of what your students in Year Two have been exploring and learning. You will see a variety of learning experiences exemplifying learning which is fun, exciting, challenging, innovative and/or creative…and whatever they are, we know that your child has worked really hard to get there and should you have the chance, you may want to share this newsletter with your child to find out the juicy details and discuss the great learning he/she has been doing!

Transdisciplinary Learning – It’s all connected!

The Year 2 students have been concluding their work on their ‘Sharing the Planet’ unit. All the Year 2 students went on a trip to the Flower Market recently. Before the trip they researched the plants they wanted to buy to help KJS. It was a very successful trip, which allowed the students to have a sense of independence and cooperate within their group. The students continued their research on the trip by talking to the shop keepers about how they needed to care for their plant. It was great to see so many enthusiastic parents coming along to support their students. Once back at school the students continued to inquire further into how to be responsible for their plant and made their decisions of where to plant their plants. The students are now looking after their plants within their groups independently.

The students have also been reflecting on their learning throughout the unit, with some taking action to find out more about plants, grow plants at home and inquire into plants in their surroundings. It has been interesting to see the different seeds and pictures of seeds/plants that many students have been bringing in to share with their class

In Maths, as growing patterns closely links to multiplication we have now taken this direction. The students have been investigating arrays in different ways: using manipulatives, creating art and using number sentences to represent their thinking. Some classes are moving onto applying our understanding to solving multiplication word problems.

In Writing, we have started look at writing stories. The students have been learning a story of by heart, looking at what’s needed to make a good story and rewriting the story while improving it. This will enable the students become innovators and create their own stories over the next few weeks. Watch this space!

Thank you for reading our message!

PHOTO CAPTIONS

The first row of photographs shows the students planting their plants from the Flower Market in the areas they thought were best based on the research they conducted.

The second row of photographs shows how some children have been inquiring into arrays and showing them in different ways.

How you can help at home

*Look for arrays in the environment.

*Read different stories at home and ask children to write down new vocabulary they find to use in their own stories

Investigate Time: We will be starting our new unit on family histories. Discuss memories from the past in your families.  If you have any artefacts or photos to share please send them in to share.

Thankyou!

Thank you to all parents who came to the Flower Market. We really appreciate your support and couldn’t do it without you.
