Yr2 Curriculum Update – 12/01/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Welcome to our seventh edition!

In each update, the Year 2 Team will bring you snapshots of what your children in Year Two have been up to. You will see a variety of learning experiences exemplifying learning which is fun, exciting, challenging, innovative and/or creative…and whatever they are, we know that your child has worked really hard to get there and should you have the chance, you may want to share this newsletter with your child to find out the juicy details and discuss the great learning he/she have been doing!

Transdisciplinary Learning – It’s all connected!

The children have been continuing to explore the ‘How We Express Ourselves’ unit. The children have been looking at causation, why the event is celebrated. The children researched why events were celebrated and created a way to share this with others in their class. They then looked at the reasons why celebrations were celebrated to see if there were similarities and differences. They then started to look at perspective further, thinking about how people celebrate the same occasions in different ways. On the first day back the children shared how they had spent the Christmas and New Year celebrations. This gave an insight into how celebrations are celebrated differently and allowed us to delve deeper. It also allowed us to again discuss being openminded and recap on our class definitions.

The Year 2 children have been working on poetry. They have been looking at using different word types, the five senses, rhyme and repetition to interest the reader. They have used writing poetry to connect with texts more deeply, helping them to visualise while reading. Our poetry has been based on different celebrations.

The children have been using their co-constructed success criteria as to at what a good listener and a good speaker is when sharing what they did over the holidays and how they celebrated. This has allowed them to us the success criteria to assess their speaking and listening skills. We will be reflecting on these skills more as the children complete their summative assessment, creating their own celebration.

In Maths, we have continued to explore addition and started to explore subtraction. We have been working on our number bonds and co-constructing success criteria that we can follow to solve word problems. We have been applying our knowledge of the vocabulary related to addition and subtraction and continuing to develop the strategies that we can use when adding and subtracting.

PHOTO CAPTIONS

The first row of photographs show the children investigating being openminded. The children drew their idea of an object and then looked at others. The children followed the success criteria for being a good speaker and a good listener to share their ideas and understand others.

The second row of photographs show the children researching why events are celebrated and comparing whether they are celebrated for similar reasons or not.

Investigate Time: Discuss and explore celebrations that you have within your family and community. Talk about how people celebrate differently and discuss why people celebrate differently. If any parents would like to come in and share their personal experiences or artefacts from celebrations please email your child’s class teacher.
