Yr2 Curriculum Update – 15/12/17

Working together to achieve success for every child

Welcome to our sixth edition!

In each update, the Year 2 Team will bring you snapshots of what your children in Year Two have been up to. You will see a variety of learning experiences exemplifying learning which is fun, exciting, challenging, innovative and/or creative…and whatever they are, we know that your child has worked really hard to get there and should you have the chance, you may want to share this newsletter with your child to find out the juicy details and discuss the great learning he/she have been doing!

Transdisciplinary Learning – It’s all connected!

The children have started exploring their new unit ‘How We Express Ourselves’. During the unit the children will be thinking about and investigating the features of a celebrations, how they are similar or different, why they are celebrated and how they are celebrated differently. The children began by taking part in ‘Celebration Day’. Each classroom was transformed into a different celebration. The children had the opportunity to go to three celebrations. The children really enjoyed it and developed questions to investigate further. Ask your children to tell you more about it at home.

The Year 2 children have been bringing in their celebration bags and we have been using these in class to inquire into celebrations further. We have also used this to inform our writing, where we have been looking at using adjectives to add detail and interest to our writing. The children have also been working hard to edit and improve their work. Leading to them publishing their final pieces of writing in different ways.

The children have also been looking at what a good listener and a good speaker is. Along with their teachers they have co-constructed success criteria that they can reflect upon as a means of self and peer assessment. They have started to use the success criteria to reflect when researching different celebrations and sharing with their classmates what they’ve found.

In Maths, we have been exploring addition. We have been working on numberless word problems. This has meant we have had chance to unpack the vocabulary related to addition and ensure our understanding is secure. We have also been looking at different strategies we can use to add. Each class has identified a strategy that they like to use when adding and will be working on developing this strategy further.

PHOTO CAPTIONS

The first row of photographs show the children investigating the celebration bags that other children had brought in. The next row of photographs show the children taking part in Celebration Day. The children were encouraged to think about the features of the celebration and why the event is celebrated, using the resources available in the classroom.

How you can help at home?

We are working on our unit ‘How We Express Ourselves’.

Using the password located in your child’s diary, go onto the KJS website www.kjs.edu.hk  and browse our Year 2 Splat page for videos and learning opportunities specific to celebrations!

Investigate Time: Discuss and explore celebrations that you have within your family and community. Talk about why people celebrate and start to discuss that people sometimes celebrate the same celebrations differently. If any parents would like to come in and share their personal experiences or artefacts from celebrations please    email your child’s class teacher.
Thankyou!

Thank you to all parents who helped their children create their celebration bags and for ensuring they were in school on time to help us move our inquiry forward. Another thank you to parents that helped with Celebration Day and to parent helpers that continue to come in every week either to work in class or help with resources.
