Yr2 Curriculum Update – 24/11/17

Working together to achieve success for every child

Welcome to our Fifth edition!

In each update, the Year 2 Team will bring you snapshots of what your children in Year Two have been up to. You will see a variety of learning experiences exemplifying learning which is fun, exciting, challenging, innovative and/or creative…and whatever they are, we know that your child has worked really hard to get there and should you have the chance, you may want to share this newsletter with your child to find out the juicy details and discuss the great learning he/she have been doing!

Transdisciplinary Learning – It’s all connected!

The students in Year 2 have been concluding their work on the ‘Who We Are’ unit. All the Year 2 children went on a trip to Lai Chi Kok Park last week taking part in different activities including walking, mindfulness activities, playing with friends, etc. The children were very excited about the activities and discussed throughout the day how they were helping to improve their wellbeing. The children reflected on the effect this had on their wellbeing after each activity and many of the children said they would like to go back to Lai Chi Kok Park again.

The children have also been reflecting on their learning throughout the unit, thinking about what it has taught them and how they can apply it to improve their social, emotional and/or physical wellbeing. The children have been thinking about what they are going to stop doing, start doing and continue doing to help their wellbeing. They reflected on this in many different ways, one being through writing. Many chose to reflect in their journals, which they have been completing regularly and others chose to write letters to explain their choices. Please ask your child what they want to start doing to improve their wellbeing and support them in being committed.

In Maths, we have continued to explore the concept of time. This week, the students have been learning how to tell the time (o’clock and half past) by reading the time on the clock and creating the time on the clock themselves. They have taken part in many different practical activities and challenges to enable them to have a deeper understanding, including making their own clocks and solving time problems.

PHOTO CAPTIONS

The first row of photographs show the children enjoying the wellbeing activities at Lai Chi Kok Park.

The next two photographs demonstrate the students carrying out activities to show their understanding of time. Students were encouraged to discuss what they were doing with other children in their group to encourage group reflection and discussion around new learning enabling them to consolidate learning. The students enjoyed exploring how to tell the time and show the time in different ways and has encouraged some children to take action.

How you can help at home?

We are now moving onto our next unit ‘How We Express Ourselves’.

Using the password located in your child’s diary, go onto the KJS website www.kjs.edu.hk  and browse our Year 2 Splat page for videos and learning opportunities specific to celebrations!

Investigate Time: Discuss and explore celebrations that you have within your family and community. Talk about why people celebrate and how they celebrate. Find pictures and artifacts of celebrations that you’ve been part of and let your child bring them into school to tell other children about them.

If any parents would like to come in and share their personal experiences or artefacts from celebrations please email your child’s class teacher.

Thankyou!

Thank you to all parents who came and helped on the Year 2 trip to Lai Chi Kok Park. All of the children had a fantastic time and talked confidently about the effects it had on their wellbeing.
