Yr2 Weekly Update – 01/13/17

Year 2 Weekly Update 13. 1.17

The choices we make affect our well-being

This week in Year 2 some classes have been learning about the “zones of regulation” to help the children deal with friendship problems and conflicts they face. The students have been looking closely at the vocabulary connected with different feelings and ranking these on an emotions scale. We hope this will help the boys and girls to rationalize their problems, find ways to talk about them and support their emotional and social well-being. All classes have also been continuing to reflect on how they are feeling each day and are keeping their well-being journals up to date. This is helping the children to become more mindful of the choices and consequences they make.

Literacy

In literacy this week the children have been introduced to the reading strategy of how to find key words. This strategy helps children to identify important information and remember it. We have also been practising how to write simple cause and effect sentences. The students have really enjoyed thinking about the consequences of different choices.

Maths

In Maths we have been continuing to work on our understanding of mass and the children have begun collecting data on their favourite drinks. This has prompted the children to stop and reflect on the type of drinks they choose and when they choose to drink them. Many of our students are making a healthy choice to drink lots of water in school and at home! We have also been building up our repertoire of mental maths strategies to help calculate addition and subtraction problems, this week focussing on bridging to 10.

Reminders

  • Our Year 2 trip to Lai Chi Kok park is on Monday 16th January (2M & 2G) and Wednesday 18th January (2B, 2P and 2T). Children need a snack and water bottle only. They will return to school for lunch as normal.
  • Please send an empty plastic water bottle to school next week with your child for an engagement we wish to complete in class.
