Yr2 Weekly Update – 02/10/17

We hope you all had a lovely time with your families during the Lunar New Year holidays. It is great to see children back at school, happy and energized, from the break.

Forces affect objects around us

Unit of Inquiry

It has been a very busy week, as we have begun How the World Works unit. Right now, we are in our tuning in stage. Students are beginning to think about what they already know about forces and motion. This week, through play based investigations, students have explored the vocabulary related to push and pull. Through discovery stations, children worked on understanding that push and pull are two main kinds of forces.

As a provocation, some classes tried to move a pebble without touching it, and soon the children realized that in order to move an object, they need to apply a force.

This week, students worked hard to co-construct the meaning of our PYP attributes. We unpacked the meaning of curiosity through story books and investigations.

Maths

For measurement, we revisited the concepts of mass and weight and consolidated our understanding on how to use nonstandard units to weigh the mass of different objects.

To further consolidate understanding of number, students have been working on addition and subtraction using different strategies.

Literacy

This week children have been introduced to the reading strategy of prediction.

Students are learning to make sensible guesses using picture clues in the book and their background knowledge about the topic. The children have really enjoyed making predictions and checking if their guesses were right.  Some classes have started working on procedure writing.  During our Writing sessions students also learned how good writers think about their ideas and use lots of details to make their ideas shine.

Action

We are proud of the fact that our students have started taking action with their learning.  Awesome job!  Every day, we see a lot of excitement in our classrooms as children bring artifacts from home that help show their understanding of forces and their connection with our daily life. We would like this to continue.

Important note:

Year 2s will now need to wear their PE kit on Tuesday as well as the regular PE days.

Starting from next week, Year 2’s will have an additional PE lesson every Tuesday. This lesson is swap over from the extra Music lesson we have had in term one. Please note other PE and Music lessons will not be affected by this change and will remain on the same days as their term one timetable.
