Yr2 Weekly Update – 03/24/17

Sharing the Planet

Plants Sustain Life on Earth and Play a Role in Our Lives

Thank You!

We would like to send a big thank you to all of the parents and children that helped to make the KJS School Fair such a success!  We were on the 4th floor and our Year 2 stall was very busy! It was lovely to see so many families having a great time.  Thank you for all of your support with the raffle tickets, to our wonderful volunteers on the day and to everyone that stopped by to say hello!

Week 1

Inquiry

We have started our ‘Sharing the Planet’ unit and the children have been tuning in to some of the areas that we will explore over the next few weeks. Our trip to the Lion’s Park on the 29th March 2017 will give the children a chance to observe and experience a number of plants, fruit and vegetables growing in their natural environment.

The classes will leave for the Lion’s Park at 9:00am and arrive back at school around 12:30pm, just in time for lunch. Students will need to bring their water bottle and a snack (in a disposable bag) for this trip. As it is warming up, a hat, sunscreen and repellant will be necessary too.

We are looking for lots of parent volunteers from each class and in case you are able to help, please let your child’s class teacher know.

Maths

Through various hands on activities and rich tasks students have been working hard to consolidate their understanding of Fractions.  The children have been expressing fractions as words and in numbers and have been investigating equivalent fractions, i.e. 1/2 is equal to 2/4, 3/6, 4/8 etc.

We have also been learning how to divide groups of objects equally and identifying fractions of numbers, i.e. half of 8 is 4.  One quarter of 8 is 2.

Literacy

The children have been looking back on their time in Year 2.  We have been discussing the progress we have made and our targets for the future.  The children have been talking to their friends, with adults in the classroom and recording their reflections and targets in writing.

Programming

The children have been working on their programming in a number of different ways.  We have been using Bee Bots, building our own challenging and exciting games and using Scratch Jr to tell stories!

Child Led Conferences

We were pleased to have such a great turnout for the Child Led Conferences.  This event is a provides the children with a platform to share their progress, discuss their learning and maybe even teach their parents a thing or two!  We were really impressed with the children’s independence and maturity and how clearly they were able to communicate their learning journeys.  Thank you for taking the time to visit our school with the children, your support means a lot to them and to us.
