Sharing the Planet

Plants Sustain Life on Earth and Play a Role in Our Lives

Welcome Back!

We hope you all had a wonderful holiday.  We have enjoyed hearing about all of the exciting things the children got up to in the holidays!

This week the children have been exploring ‘function’ and how plants grow.  The children inquired into the different parts of plants and why they are important and how they work together.  We have looked at different kinds of plants and what they need to grow and survive.  The children have also been exploring ‘connection’ and are beginning to think about the vital role that plants play in our lives and how they support life on Earth.

English

The children have been summarising, looking at books, videos and other multimodal texts, picking out key words and information and communicating their understandings in their own words and illustrations.

We have been reading narrative texts and focusing on retelling the story, identifying the setting, characters and relaying the events in sequence with the beginning, middle and end.

Maths

We have been introducing the concept of multiplication, first through repeated addition (5+5+5+5+5) along a number line, and then through the introduction of visual arrays.

The array above shows 5×4.  The children have been working to solve open-ended problems using arrays in authentic and familiar settings.

Reminders

It has suddenly gotten a lot hotter in Hong Kong.  Can you please ensure that your child brings their hat to school EVERY DAY!  It is school policy that students wear a hat at both lunch and playtime.  There are many children who are not at present bringing them.  Hats can be purchased at the PTA office.  Please write your child’s name and class on them (they are frequently lost and will be placed in the lost and found area on the ground floor).

It is also a good idea to put sunscreen and bug spray on your child before they come to school.  They are not allowed to apply it themselves so should not bring it to school.

Thank you!
