Sharing the Planet

Plants Sustain Life on Earth and Play a Role in Our Lives

Unit of Inquiry

This week the children have been exploring ‘function’ and ‘connection’.  The children have also been learning how plants grow and develop.  We have been researching the function of each part of the plant, how the parts are connected and why they are vital to the plants’ growth and development.

We have looked at how plants adjust to their environment and the similarities and differences in their life cycles.  The children are continuing to record and observe how plants grow, what they need to remain healthy and what happens when they are deprived of things that that they need.

Next month the children will be going on a trip to the Hong Kong Flower Market.  We will be looking to purchase plants that can help us around school, that might be useful in our daily lives or contribute to our wellbeing.

We would be very grateful for volunteers on this trip, if you are available to help please contact your child’s class teacher directly.

Trip to Flower Market – Wednesday 10th May

8.45am – 10.15am – 2T, 2M

10.15am – 11.45am – 2G, 2B

12.30pm – 2.00pm – 2P

English

The children have been summarising, looking at books, videos and other multimodal texts, picking out key words and information and communicating their understandings in their own words and illustrations.

We have been reading narrative texts and focusing on retelling the story, identifying the setting, characters and relaying the events in sequence with the beginning, middle and end.

The children have been preparing to retell familiar stories in writing by creating writing planners and story maps.

Maths

We have been continuing our work on arrays, searching for them in the world around us.  The children have found arrays in Lego blocks, baking trays, windows and chocolate boxes!  Students have also been creating their own arrays and recording them as repeated addition (5+5+5) and multiplication (5×3) number sentences.

Reminders

The children will be enjoying some time off next week, with two National holidays, Labour Day on Monday May 1st and Buddha’s Birthday on Wednesday May 3rd.  Students will return to school on Thursday 4th May.
