Yr2 Weekly Update – 07/10/16

Celebration time, come on!  We have been immersing students in all sorts of celebrations this week.  Students spent time investigating our Year 2 celebration tree, noting interesting observations and wonderings.  They built their excitement by visiting five celebration rooms and posing questions to the resident experts.  Students enthusiastically began sharing their celebration bags with friends, an engagement that helps them become more open-minded and respectful of others.

Math explorations focused on building a deeper understanding of number.  Students looked for patterns to help them understand odd and even numbers.  They discovered that, when building even numbers, they can form perfect pairs, but when building odd numbers, there is always an extra unit. Some students also collected data about what classmates celebrate and then organized the information in human graphs and pictographs.

In Literacy, students began writing about their favourite celebrations, including why and how they celebrate.  They were encouraged to use their senses to help make the writing descriptive. During reading, they read non-fiction texts about celebrations, identified new learning and made connections with what they already knew.

Students were given the opportunity to take their learning outdoors this week, a practice we hope to continue.  Groups of students could be seen around the school grounds engaged in their learning.  Some found quiet places to read independently, others sat under a tree to get inspiration for their creative writing.  Some classes even searched for examples of odd and even numbers in the real world.  The world really is our classroom.
