Yr2 Weekly Update – 12/02/16

yr2

What an exciting and joyful week we have had in Year 2 tuning into our new inquiry into Who We Are. This unit is about helping the children to understand there are many choices we make that contribute towards our well being. To provoke our students thinking we ran a “Healthy Choices” day where the children selected different activities to test out and try. The choices included yoga, drama games, problem solving, dodgeball, food preparation, rugby, fitness, art and circle time. It was a wonderful success and the children now have a clearer idea that well being comprises of three parts; physical, social and emotional well being. The children have also begun reflecting on ways they might make changes to improve their well being and have set themselves a personal target to work on. We are looking forward to seeing how this goes and what steps the students take to get there!

Literacy

In literacy this week we have finding out the meanings of some of the new vocabulary words connected with this unit. Many of the classes have also been learning how to use a dictionary to help them make sense of new words. The children have also been creating their own central ideas using these words and have been sharing their thinking with one another. In writing we have continuing to add detail to all our work and have enjoyed writing our own food menu’s for our perfect meals!

Maths

We have been continuing to practise using different strategies to help solve addition and subtraction problems and have been working on our mental recall of number bonds to 20. Most classes have also begun exploring and investigating the weight of different objects and have been introduced to the vocabulary connected with mass such as heavy, light, heavier and lightest.
