Yr2 Weekly Update – 26/8/16

This week the children have been learning about codes of behaviour, how to present oneself in different situations, how humour can be appropriate at some times and not at others and how we can agree to such codes in an attempt to better function together.  As a direct consequence of this they have been designing essential agreements or success criteria for a successful learning community.  This includes ideas about how to move about, particularly how to best transition from one activity or engagement to another, how to responsibly use resources and how to respect each other as learners.

We have been focusing on the area of metacognition this week and have been recapping how the children can use reflection and target setting in conjunction with split screen success criteria to have real ownership of their learning.  Increasing the learner’s agency is a major goal for the Year 2 team, and for the school, this year.

On a more practical level, we have been endeavouring to teach the children how to access SPLAT and how to log on consistently and without being frustrated by easily avoided errors (such as putting a space at the beginning of your login name).  They still find this challenging and it will be something which comes with practice, and patience.

In Maths this week we have been trying to give the children some attitudes which will increase their resilience and improve their success at problem solving.  We have encouraged them to be independent in their thinking, open minded about how a problem might be solved and committed to trying to reach a solution even when they problem is a challenging one.  We have also touched on time and time management as we try to get them used to handling the weekly timetable and the component [arts of that for which they are responsible, such as playtime and lunchtime.  WE want the children to realise that sometimes it is up to them to track time and complete tasks in a timely fashion so that the next thing which needs to happen can happen!

Finally we have been looking at asking questions and recording our ideas through writing and drawing.  WE have spent some time investigating our own names and trying to think of aide memoires to help us remember other people’s names.

All in all another great week.  Have a lovely weekend with lots of day dreaming and spontaneous fun!
