Yr3 Curriculum Update – 01/06/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Central Idea: The food we buy goes through a process of change before it is eaten.

Trip to EFarm

Dear Parents,

We had the opportunity to go to a local farm this week! There, students explored aquaponics, composting, pickling and farm services like trellis building and planting. Despite the heat, the children had an incredible time exploring this small, organic farm and all of the different processes that take place. One way to extend their knowledge at home is to compare and contrast the small organic farm we went to with a large, industrial farm. What are the differences and similarities?

English

In English literacy we have been exploring sequential writing, like “First, Then, Followed by..” when identifying the different processes food goes through to get from the farm to our table. We are continuing to build on our previous knowledge about informative/non-fiction texts and reviewing important text features like how indexes and glossaries can help our understanding. We will be working on building success criteria for what makes a successful presentation so that we can present our knowledge about the food production process.

Maths

We have finished exploring and investigating the attributes of 2D and 3D shapes and have moved onto probability. For our focus, we will be working with students to understand the likelihood of something happening using words like “impossible, unlikely, equally likely, likely and certain”. One way to support their understanding at home is to come up with different scenarios! For example: What is the likelihood you will see a dinosaur on your way to school tomorrow? Why? What is the likelihood it will be sunny and hot tomorrow? Why? See if your child can come up with different scenarios on their own! Using a probability line like the one pictured below will help them make connections to percentages and fractions:
