Yr3 Curriculum Update – 09/03/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

The Unit of Inquiry:

Exploration and Discovery lead to change

After a long three weeks of being away, it was wonderful to welcome the children back to school. They were delighted to be reunited with friends and school life and we spent time sharing how we spent our extended holiday.

We have now picked up from where we left off with our Unit of Inquiry. The visit to the museum had given the children a glimpse into Hong Kong’s history and the changes it has gone through. We have now broadened our research into exploration and discovery around the world.

We have been inspired by sports people, performers, environmentalists and a wide range of people who faced and overcame struggles in order to fulfill their dreams.

The children have focused on an individual of their choice who has left an impact on the world. They will research this impact and evaluate it over the next two weeks. This will culminate into a ‘Living Museum’ where the children will have an opportunity to present their learning to an audience.

Year 3 has begun research into our Living Museum

Last week, Book Week continued with events and the dress up parade! On Friday the children were treated to two special Chinese New Year related events- an assembly with a range of performances and the always-thrilling lion dance. May the Year of the Dog bring happiness and joy!

English

Our unit has focussed on the achievements of those who have helped shape the world we know today. We have looked at well-known people ranging from musicians and performers to scientists and explorers and those who have stood for social reform. The children have used the structure of biographies to read and write about these individuals.  Some classes are also exploring autobiographies and giving children a chance to write about themselves and their achievements!

Maths

The ability to tell the time by reading clocks is only one of the many skills that the children have been exploring these past few days. They have been immersed in the vocabulary we use to express time. We have looked at timelines -both personal and those of famous people in our world. This has linked perfectly with our unit about the historical contribution made by certain important people as we write biographies. They have learned that the concept of time can be used in relation to weather, speed, clocks, planning schedules, time elapsed and so on. Some classes have exposed the children to time in art such as Salvador Dali’s Persistence of Memory and how futile it is to hold on to time!

Creating timelines of our day and matching the analogue clocks to their times.

We look forward to seeing you at next week’s Student Led Conference where your child will have many opportunities to share and celebrate his or her learning!

A note regarding sailing

In previous years the students took part in a sailing day. Because of curriculum changes we felt this was no longer relevant and sailing will not take place this academic year.
