Yr3 Curriculum Update – 10/11/17

Working together to achieve success for every child

The Unit of Inquiry:

A scientific understanding of natural hazards reduces their impact on human societies.

UOI

As the Unit moves towards it final week we see the children start to demonstrate their understanding in various ways.  Students from 3P taught their peers from 3A some of the skills and concepts that they had learned while making infographics.  Success criteria developed and agreed upon by the learners included: use of words and numbers, use of colour to separate different data themes and the use of simple, stylised images to let people know what the infographic is all about.

English Writing

Again, it has been a time for great collaboration between the classes and Writing saw 3C and 3A taking the lead as pupils from both classes traveled to their friends classrooms to share what they new about the poetry of Haiku and Acrostic.

English Reading

Our reading has been mostly research based again, although the poetry that has been created over the last 14 days or so has given a few of our braver performers the opportunity to present their work to an audience of classmates.

Another exciting development is that the Y3 teachers have started a Choose Your Reader system.  This means that rather than hearing stories read by the same teacher through the year, the children can choose to listen to a story read by one teacher and then, when that has finished, they can choose to listen to a different teacher reading.  The scheme started of with these books being read:  The Fantastic Mr Fox, The Twits, The Three Ravens, Charlotte’s Web and Manxmouse.

Maths

Subtraction is the hot topic at the moment.  Children are being encouraged to discover for themselves the connections between subtraction and the addition algorithms we already investigated.

Home Learning (optional)

Dice games are a great way to have fun together and address addition and subtraction.  Try this at home for some fun and learning:

“Pig” Dice Game for Kids
Even though the directions make this game sound easy, unless you are good at throwing 1s, this game can be tricky to win. The game is called “Pig” because the first player “hogs” the dice in an effort to win the game.

Dice needed: 1
Object of the game: To score 100 points or more
Directions for play:
Have the players throw the die to determine order of play. The lowest roll goes first.
The first player rolls the die and adds up the numbers after each roll. They may stop rolling at any time and end the turn
The player loses all points for the turn when a 1 is rolled.
If the first player gets to 100 points on their first turn, the other player(s) may take their turn to try to achieve a better score.

Dates for your diary:

The school production, Madagascar the Musical, is coming up, tickets will be available soon.

Remember if you have any concerns or questions about your child’s learning and wellbeing at school please contact your child’s teacher in the first instance.

Thanks
