Yr3 Curriculum Update – 13/10/17

Working together to achieve success for every child

The Unit of Inquiry:

A scientific understanding of natural hazards reduces their impact on human societies.

The children have launched into the new unit of inquiry with excitement and energy.  Ms Diaz demonstrated her ICT skills by creating a website specifically for the unit which allows the learners to make a one-stop-shop and find the information they need without having to discriminate between the thousands of different sites generated by a regular search.

Along with the new unit on natural hazards comes Mrs Tucker and her dance focus.  Using the descriptive language around volcanoes, earthquakes and other natural hazards, Mrs Tucker is inspiring the children to choreograph their own short phrases which represent the nature of the hazards.  This has been extremely successful so far with most of the children taking to the dance with verve and gusto!

Maths

Maths is back after the break and we find ourselves up to our knees, chests and even eyebrows in measuring.  The children are using measuring to solve real life, practical problems.  One of those was how best to determine the height of desk that should be purchased so that it is suitable for the majority of Y3 pupils to stand at while learning.

This was another opportunity for some of the classes to work together, with the children forming groups with peers not only in their own class.

It was fun, noisy, high-energy and challenging.  In the end though we got a range of heights from about 80cm to 140cm, and the consensus seemed to be that we simply couldn’t get one height to suit everyone, we needed to buy a few of each.

We have also begun our work on addition and subtraction.  This builds on the place value work from the beginning of the term and will incorporate different strategies for adding and taking away.

English

We are focussing on descriptive language, including adjectives and adverbs, so that we can better describe the true effects of natural hazards.  We are working towards becoming proficient report and explanation writers.  Skills for research and the presentation of ideas are also being taught.

Thanks, the Y3 Team
