Yr3 Weekly Update – 09/9/16

Central Idea:

Relationships are affected by the way people communicate

Last week’s Marshmallow Challenge revealed that working together was exciting, enjoyable, creative and at times frustrating. When reflecting at the end of the challenge, some children shared that they were proud of having worked hard but that they were disappointed when others did not listen to their ideas or spoke rudely.

This has led to us exploring how people communicate in ways that might be positive or negative.

The children have also looked at nonverbal communication through dance as they expressed emotions using music to express happiness, calmness, sadness and excitement.

Maths

As we continue to explore the big ideas behind place value and the number system, the children have been focusing on decomposing (breaking apart) and composing (forming) two and three digit numbers. The base 10 materials are invaluable when allowing children to build these skills in a concrete way. They have been using place mats to arrange the materials and then move or trade (exchange) them. This is helping them to see for example that one hundred is the same as ten tens as well or one hundred ones.

Literacy

Good writers have a few key traits in common – six of which we will be teaching explicitly this year. Developed by Sheena Cameron, the first of these traits is, developing great ideas. The children have been brainstorming ideas, using their own experiences and interests as a stimulus. They are learning how to identify the main part of their idea and how to add supporting details. We have also been visualizing or creating images in our heads and then on paper as we read descriptions by well-known authors such as Roald Dahl.

Home learning to share with the children

What kinds of communication can you identify at home? Which ones are nonverbal?

Keep your number sense going by counting out a hundred items of your choice. If you would like a challenge, how about counting out a thousand items? Send us a photograph by email or bring it in!
