Yr4 Curriculum Update – 09/03/18

Working together to achieve success for every child

Dear Parents,

In inquiry we have looked at the various techniques used by artists to create their work. Students have had the opportunity to engage in using a variety of materials such as paper, clay, newspaper and cardboard. We have looked at the different perspectives that are present when viewing a particular piece and compared the various views with that of the artist. Students have then made their own artist statement in regards to a completed piece of work they feel proud of.

In language we have completed our unit on poetry following the creative process of ideas, drafting, revising our first draft to improve it by considering our word choice, editing and proofreading and finally publishing. We have also begun to consider what makes a successful artist statement.

In reading the children have become detectives in order to try and crack the mystery of who stole Horace’s Birthday feast in the amazing book, The Eleventh Hour by Graeme Base. They have had to apply all their skills of viewing and synthesizing to identify and solve the clues hidden throughout the book in order to find the culprit! The children have been independent in the investigations and have used a variety of research tools to help them in ongoing investigations.

In maths we have been continuing to learn about fractions, looking at how to find a fraction of a number or how to find a fraction of a set. We are starting to look at pattern in number, solving equivalent number sentences involving addition and subtraction to find unknown quantities. We will continue looking at  pattern and function in number over the next few weeks.

Year Four student, Claire So was awarded the Grand Prize in an open competition hosted by Hung Li Hong Kong, a calligraphy and painting enthusiast association founded in 1997. The Grand Award is the highest honour and was awarded to the best one within their age group.

Lots of students enjoyed dressing up for the End of Book Week Character Parade.  We enjoyed wearing our Chinese costumes to celebrate Chinese New Year too!
