Yr4 Curriculum Update – 15/12/17

Working together to achieve success for every child

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the final curriculum update of 2017. Since camp, we have begun our new unit of inquiry for Sharing the Planet. Please see the unit overview that was sent to you last week for more details about what we are planning to do and how you could support your children. The children are very excited about finding out more about the special adaptations of living things and our trip to the Wetlands Park was a great introduction to this.

In reading, we have continued to develop our comprehension through determining the importance of the information in the texts read. The students have used such strategies as PEEK and turning a heading into a question to help them determine what information is relevant to what they want to find out.

In writing we have begun to write stories about animals inspired by the Just So and Australian dreamtime stories explaining how animals got special features. The children have written a first draft and worked with a peer to assess their writing using the success criteria for writing an engaging narrative they helped write. They have also identified evidence of achieving their writing targets and what their next steps are to continue to improve their writing.

In Maths we have been consolidating our understanding of multiplication and making links with division.

What you can do to help at home

When your child is reading non-fiction, encourage them to have a question in mind that they think the text can answer. Ask them to show you the strategies they can use to find the information to answer their question. Go for walks in different parts of Hong Kong to explore the plants and animals that live there – how are they different? What features do they have that help them to survive in that environment?

A date for your diaries:

Remember to get your tickets for the Red and Gold themed Disco on the 19th January!

Remember, if you have any concerns or questions about your child’s learning and wellbeing at school, please contact your child’s teacher in the first instance.

What a great term we have had, we hope you all have a wonderful, safe and relaxing holiday and we look forward to welcoming the children back in 2018!

Kind Regards

Team Year 4.
