Yr4 Weekly Update – 02/17/17

There have been some fantastic sights in Y4 this week with classes well under way with their  units on how we express ourselves. Children have had the chance to look at Georgia O’Keeffe and Andy Goldsworthy as examples of artists who are inspired by the natural world. We, in turn, have been inspired to make some of our own 3D art out of paper and cardboard. Children have been thinking about how they can use the approaches to learning of viewing and synthesis to build their own creative cycles.

Some classes have also been using TinkerCad to design their own pieces for the new 3D printer. Very techie!

Mrs Bond came in to share with us her creative process and talk us through how she created the fantastic murals in the Library. She also let us into a secret – there’s going to be a new painting starting soon…

Literacy

We have explored imagery in writing and looked specifically at similes this week. We have also looked at synthesis again as a reading comprehension strategy. Good readers make sense of the text by synthesising their new knowledge with existing or background knowledge.

Maths

Students continued to develop their conceptual understanding of fractions as parts of a whole and have begun to use equivalence to help add and subtract fractions of like and similar denominators. They have also been solving real life fraction problems.

Home Learning

Lots of students are really taking an interest in the natural world around them. Try and get out this weekend and explore some of the fantastic natural environments around Hong Kong – the weather is perfect for exploring!

Children have all been given log in details to MyMaths and teachers have set some relevant tasks to do. There are also games and tutorials there to help consolidate those essential maths facts and skills.

Please can I also remind families of how important it is that all children are still reading to an adult daily and having a conversation about their reading to develop their understanding of the texts.

Remember our camp art on the beach? See you out there…
