Yr4 Weekly Update – 07/10/16

General

This week we finished our Unit of Inquiry on Who We Are. The students have set themselves growth targets and thought carefully about how to go about achieving them. They have also been lending their voice to our development of their next steps in the skills and dispositions. We will report on this unit after the half term break, using our new reporting system.

Children have also done their ISA testing this week. These tests help to inform the school of learning trends across year groups and help us to continue to develop curriculum that best serves the needs of our students.

Please let me take this opportunity to thank you for your support this term. The students have settled in very well and the teachers are continuing to build strong and positive relationships with their classes and getting to know their students’ needs and passions.

Maths

We have continued looking at probability and likelihood in real life situations. Using the vocabulary we have learned, we have tried to analyse different situations and determine how likely events will be. The children have been challenged to explain their thinking and to consider how they can make their predictions more accurate by observing more carefully.

Literacy

Our reading comprehension strategy has been “asking questions’ again this week. The students are beginning to show us how they can use questions to develop their understanding of the text and create more of an internal dialogue.

Home Learning

Children should continue to do their home reading over the holidays – short regular sessions with an adult are the most effective way to hone skills and build working vocabulary. A number of parents have asked for ways to help their child improve in their reading. There are no shortcuts here unfortunately – practice makes perfect!

Choosing reading material that excites and engages children is essential. Plan a trip to the library or bookstore over the next week and grab a great book to get lost in!

Children have been writing personal journals this term. A trip away or a day in the holidays is the perfect chance for them to show you their new writing skills. Ask them about their ‘text signposts’…
