Yr4 Curriculum Update – 08/09/17

Working together to achieve success for every child

Dear Parents,

Following the feedback we have received via the online survey to parents and the discussions we have had as a staff we will be providing the ‘Curriculum Update’ fortnightly on a Friday for 2017/18. This ensures we can share meaningful reflections with parents regarding the learning that has occurred over the last fortnight, signal upcoming events and activities and provide support for home school links.

Well we are into week four of Year four! The children have settled in well and are now fully immersed in their learning.

What a great first unit we’ve started with! It’s all about how to be a successful learner and how to take on challenges. The children have been thinking about the question “What do successful learners do?”

We made paper aeroplanes and reflected on the learning involved in making them. We are also reading books about characters that are learning a skill or overcoming a challenge, to help us identify and understand the traits of successful learners.

Maybe you could chat with your child about learning you have found difficult and talk about challenges you have face and how you overcome them or deal with them.

Do you consider yourself a successful learner? If so why? Why not? Share your thoughts with your child.

In language we have also been looking at the language trait of “ideas”. How do you narrow down the idea you want to write about? Also we are looking at the writing trait of “voice” Can the children portray how they are feeling through their writing? Can they identify the feeling of the writer as they read the writing of others?

During reading we have been encouraging the children to monitor their comprehension and notice their inner voice as they read. Noticing what you are thinking as you read helps you understand what you have read!

In Maths we are securing our understanding of place value. What is the significance of the 10s 100s 1000s  10 000s  and 100 000s? How are the place values all connected?

Next week the children will be doing the INCAS tests. No preparation needed. They are online tests looking at reading, vocabulary, spelling, mental maths and general maths.

A date for your diaries:
