Yr4 Weekly Update – 12/02/16

This week we have been getting stuck into our Sharing the Planet unit. We have been tuning into the concept of adaptation and how plants and animals have to compete for resources to survive.

Students have had the chance to practice their observing skills by creating scientific drawings of plants and insects. They have also begun to think about the types of questions they need to ask in order to classify organisms.

We have had fun finding natural habitats around school, and beginning to think about what our responsibilities as human beings might be to the natural world.

Literacy

We have begun to build our technical vocabulary in this unit through collecting unknown words and creating a class glossary. Our reading has focussed on the strategy of Determining Importance through analysing non-fiction texts. Children looked for Facts, Questions and Responses to help them understand the meaning of the text and develop new vocabulary.

Maths

Our Multiplicative Thinking project has begun to help us find efficient methods for double-digit numbers. Building on our understanding of arrays, we have looked at more complex patterns and combined arrays.

Home Learning

Have a look around your local area for natural habitats and organisms that have adapted to their habitats. Explain to your family how to write an equation that describes an array.
