Yr4 Weekly Update – 19/8/16

Getting to know you:

This week we have been doing lots of activities which are helping us get to know each other. We have been exploring what we think is a great learning environment and developing some essential agreements for how we will ‘be’ in our classrooms and around school.

Maths:

We have been doing some initial assessments on place value this week and revision of place value, ordering and rounding. We have also been looking at a rich task and introducing the inquiry cycle as a structure to help with problem solving.

Literacy:

This week we have read some stories about characters who have different strengths in preparation for our first unit of inquiry which will start in just over a week. Children have had a chance to show how well they can write and present their thinking. We have reminded children how important it is to practice their reading everyday, and how to choose a book they will enjoy.

Some classes have been doing reading assessments and this will continue over the next few weeks to get an accurate picture of each student’s learning needs

Home Learning:

All students should now have a home reading book. The most important element of our Y4 home learning programme is daily reading. Students are expected to do at least 15 minutes reading at home from a book at an appropriate level of challenge. It is highly desirable that this is done with an adult who is able to help with errors and ask questions to extend thinking.

Students have also been given their Sumdog passwords and usernames. This is a great online resource for building speed and fluency in mental number facts. We encourage some regular guided use of this as part of home learning.
