Yr4 Weekly Update – 21/10/16

General

A short week this week saw Year 4 start their new unit on How We Organise Ourselves. The central Idea is that “Tools and systems are created to enable people to communicate”. We have been busy this week tuning in to the big ideas and concepts that this unit tackles. There are many different examples of systems in our bodies, in our schools and homes and in Hong Kong in general. Communication also takes many different forms and we have uncovered some more obscure ways of getting our message across!

Thank you to all parents who attended the Camp Meeting this week. Information will be sent out regarding kit requirements as well as arrangements for the first day ASAP. We’ll also post the presentation on the website for those who were unable to attend.

Maths

We have begun to look at addition and subtraction calculation and identify some of the different strategies we can use to approach problems. Choosing an appropriate method is a key skill in calculations and having a range of methods is what makes students confident mathematicians. We have also begun to identify when a mental method is appropriate and when we need to move to a written method.

Literacy

This week, students completed a moderated piece of writing about ‘a special time’. This will help teachers add to their understanding of students’ capability and needs in writing. We finished looking at questioning as a comprehension strategy and collected vocabulary around our new unit of inquiry.

Home Learning
Children have been looking at the concepts of communication and systems. We have asked them to see if they can notice what systems they use in their lives, and the different ways in which they communicate. Ask children to explain and refine their definitions of these two concepts.
