Working together to achieve success for every child

Our  Transdisciplinary Unit of Inquiry: How we organise ourselves: “Producers and consumers play interdependent roles in the economic system”

Dear Parents

Our Unit of Inquiry on businesses has continued over the last two weeks with some inquiry into the concepts of demand and supply, the way producers and consumers are interdependent and the features of both macro and micro economic systems. This all sounds quite complicated but the children have been able to relate it back to their experiences at mini-market day and in their wider lives. They have also begun to for groups and think about what product or service they will design for the real market day on June 22.

This process will go on over the next couple of weeks, with groups pitching their business plans to the teachers in a “dragons den” style presentation. Excitement is high for our last unit of Year 5 and the students are really engaged in their learning.

Classes also started their unit of dance with Mrs Tucker. Over the next 4 Tuesdays, children will develop a group dance around the concepts of systems and teamwork.

In Maths, we have been learning about pattern and function. Describing repeating patterns with words and pictures is a great way for students to develop the language and conceptual understanding around both arithmetic and geometric patterns. There have been some strong links to artwork through this topic and a great activity from the Jo Boaler YouCubed website has prompted some interesting and innovative thinking.

Our reading this week has again been around the comprehension strategy ‘reading with a question in mind’ as we investigate non-fiction books to do with successful businesses. Amazon and Heinz have been two companies featured and students have been ‘reading to learn’, making connections in their reading. There are some great books at a range of levels on Big Universe that students can access through their SPLAT accounts

Students have continued to learn about how to write a REPORT in the context of the unit. Compiling a business report for their products will be an authentic use for this text type. Students have constructed criteria for successful reports similar to the following:
