UOI and Literacy

How fantastic it has been to watch the students put into practise all the skills and learner profile attributes they have learnt throughout this unit, whilst enjoying being the leader of their own learning. Throughout this week the students have been finalising their inquiries and summative assessment.  Enthusiasm and enjoyment is a huge factor when learning, so this explains why every ten minutes a student is bursting to tell their teachers something new they found out whilst researching their personal inquiry.  Students are in charge of their learning, having created their carefully constructed inquiry question, which covers the key concepts: connection, causation and responsibilities.  The learner attributes they are displaying are thinkers and appreciation and the skills they are putting into practise are synthesis and application.  We have delved deeper into how we can research and have come to an amazing discovery; There is more to researching than using Google!  We can use other forms of media, such as newspapers, magazine articles and books.  We can also interview an expert, survey different groups of people and observe what is happening in our school, on our streets and at home.  It’s like being a detective!

Maths

Having completed our inquiries into multiplication, we have had the chance to reflect upon our learning.  What new learning have I done?  How has my thinking changed since I began the unit? What do I now know about the process of problem solving? Which method of multiplication do I prefer and why?  We have now begun our next maths unit, inquiring into the central idea of: ‘Fractions, decimal fractions and percentages are ways of representing whole-part relationships.’ Before we begin a new unit we complete a pre-assessment which shows what we already understand and identifies what we need to focus on in our inquiries.  Our lines of inquiry which guide our unit are:

  • How we name fractions, decimals and percentages (form)
  • How fractions, decimals and percentages express parts of a whole accurately (Function)
  • How fractions, decimals and percentages are interrelated (Connection)

Can your children find real life examples of where fractions, decimals and percentages are found in everyday life? Can they identify the’ whole’ and the ‘part’?

Thank you

Thank you to all the parents who were able to come along and support their child at sports day. We had a fantastic morning competing for our houses and well done to all the students who were involved.  The cherry on the cake was the gorgeous weather which accompanied us.

Homelearning:

  • Twenty minutes daily reading;
  • Try some of the online maths activities to reinforce learning in multiplication and division using MyMaths, Table Trees, Moon Maths or these online games.
