Yr5 Weekly Update – 07/10/16

Central Idea: Media can influence an audience’s thinking and behaviour.

This is the first week of our unit of inquiry. This is an inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feeling, nature, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.

On Wednesday, as part of the tuning in process of our inquiry, the children have all rotated around different classrooms to be exposed to different media of print, the internet and movies. They had to do a thinking routine called Claim,  Support and Response where they had to identify what type of media it was and who it was created for (the audience), then finding evidence they found to support their claim, then the last one was to say how the image made them feel, see and want to do.

Literacy

This week we have continued our focus on using the context to help work out unknown words. Most children can decode words well but they are not sure about the meaning of what they have just read.  So we are teaching the children to stop if they don’t understand what a word means; read the sentence again, what prior knowledge do they have about this topic and then to look for clues in the rest of the sentence to help them work out the meaning. The children would definitely benefit from further practise in this strategy whilst reading at home.

Maths

This is our second week on shape and space. The focus has been on enlarging, reducing, rotating and translating 2D shapes. Children have been using protractors to measure angles.

Keep delving into the My Maths website as the children also need to keep practicing their understanding about decimals, this is ordering them, writing in expanded forms, writing them as a fraction, and renaming them.

ISA

This week we have also been doing our ISA tests. On Monday we completed the math’s section and writing about their own experience, on Tuesday we finished the reading and writing section where the children had to write their opinion about a given topic. As is the normal practice you will get the results when it has been marked, and sent back to us.

Other news

Next week is our half term holiday, so we will see you back at school on Tuesday 18th October.

The teachers have a professional development day at Renaissance College on Monday 17th October. So no school that day.

A reminder that on Tuesday there are also school photos.

On Wednesday 19th at 3pm there is a parent meeting regarding camp, which we would encourage you to attend.

Homework

  • Twenty minutes daily reading;
  • Try some of the online maths activities to reinforce learning in place value – students have been given their login and passwords for MyMaths.
