Yr5 Curriculum Update – 08/09/17

Working together to achieve success for every child

Dear Families,

Following the feedback we have received via the online survey to parents and the discussions we have had as a staff we will be providing the ‘Curriculum Update’ fortnightly on a Friday for 2017/18. This ensures we can share meaningful reflections with parents regarding the learning that has occurred over the last fortnight, signal upcoming events and activities and provide support for home school links.

Over the last week Y5 have been completing their INCAS assessments. These assessments give us useful data on where students are in their learning and how we can plan for their learning needs. Please remember that they provide a snapshot rather than the whole picture and we use the data alongside our teacher assessments to build a fuller understanding of learners.

We have been developing our skills of formulating ‘good’ questions to drive our inquiry into children’s rights, and have begun to look at the actions we and others can take to uphold these rights. UNICEF have been in to tell us about the work they do around the world and the organisation will continue to be a focus for many students as they look at different types of action.

Our reading has focused on using our Inner Voice to help us comprehend text, asking questions, making connections and creating theories about stories of human rights heroes. We have also been looking at ways to improve our persuasive writing, particularly through organisation and powerful word choice.

In maths, we have been exploring big numbers in our place value unit. Confidence with manipulating place value is at the very centre of mathematical understanding and we have been partitioning, renaming, ordering and rounding in numbers up to and beyond a million, as well as looking at how the system can be extended to decimal fractions such as tenths and hundredths.

Try asking your child about what they consider their rights and responsibilities are, and how they might look in the context of family life. The UNICEF website has quite a few excellent photo essays which will promote good further conversations with children if you wish.

Kind regards

Y5 Team
