Yr5 Weekly Update – 11/25/16

We thought you might like to read some of the reflections the students made about our fantastic Y5 camp this week. In spite of the awful weather on Tuesday and Wednesday, the students made the most of every opportunity and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. They are all a little more independent and better able to organise themselves as well as work collaboratively with their friends. We are sure they will sleep very well tonight!

There were some items not claimed from the lost and found, mainly because there were no names on them. If your child has not brought back all of their belongings the lost and found is in our shared area available to be collected. Please come and claim missing items yourselves as the students have had ample opportunity to get them but clearly were not sure if they belonged to them. Any unclaimed items by the end of the week will be disposed of as they will be extremely smelly by then!

Our camp reflections

Conrad 5K

I like sleeping in the dorm because it is cosy and warm. I enjoyed the hot chocolate as it was warm and tasty after our activity of baking a camp fire by the dam. It was only a little one so the police didn’t need to come.

My favourite activity was making the cardboard robot. I used cardboard boxes. I used duct tape to hold it together there was no cutting I stacked the boxes on top of each other. I am really proud of my robot.

My favourite thing on camp was the walk to the bridge where the wish fish were. There was beautiful scenery to look at while we were walking in the country park. While I was looking at the fish I was making a wish. I hope it comes true.

Toby taught us that the orange on the rocks is called  Lichen had been there for a long time and that tells us the air is fresh and not polluted.

We also put bamboo sticks together with rope so that they would not come apart. We learnt how to tie knots well and how to tighten the rope. We made a camera tripod to practise.

I enjoyed sleeping in the dorms with my friends and eating all the yummy food and drinking hot chocolate.

My favourite thing was Survival at the beach. We had to make a campfire out of sticks and use Flint to make the fire. Some of us built shelters and some of us made the fire and some of us were doing random things like finding food or making a wall.  I took some leaves and tied them together to make a pillow. I was happy to make a pillow. When I picked the leaf I cut my finger. I looked for some shells to eat and then. I found some that had a sticky bit under them I didn’t even have to look under a rock! The time went really fast. I feel like I could survive outdoors at least for a night now.

My favourite thing about camp was Survival. We were pretending we were in a shipwreck and we had to survive. We learnt how to make a fire using flint and steel and some wood. We had to line the wood up and we rubbed the flint together to make a spark. It worked. We tried to make it into a roaring fire but it only worked for a while.

We made a toilet using nature like some rocks and some leaves. The toilet was behind a big tree that had fallen down so that no one could see us.

Our house kept falling down because it was windy and the sticks weren’t big enough.

I think I could survive outside now.

My favourite things on camp were learning to survive, raft building and eating fig bars.

In raft building we got two poles and then we made three squares made out of bamboo. We tied the bamboo to the poles horizontally and then attached the bamboo to the tyres. The tyres were tied together, a bag filled with equipment was used as a saddle so that we had something to sit on.

We had a race against two other teams to get across to the tree on the ground by pulling it. The objective was to get the whole team across to the other side with the raft not falling apart. It was a really bumpy ride but fun.

Other news

We are beginning our new unit next week which focuses on the importance of biodiversity. To begin the tuning in process we are going to The Wetlands next Wednesday 30th November. We will leave at 9:00am and return by 2:00pm. Please ensure your child brings a snack and packed lunch for the day. As we will be out Deli Fresh lunches will be cancelled so all children must bring their own lunch.

We would very much appreciate some parent volunteers to come and support the students. We need two parent volunteers from each class. If you are able to give us your time, please contact your child’s teacher by Tuesday 29th November, it will be on a first come first serve basis. Thank you!
