Yr6 Weekly Update – 01/13/17

Sharing the Planet

We started our unit with lots of provocations and explorations into potential and kinetic energy. We looked at the difference between potential and kinetic energy and how it is transformed. We used everyday items such as a flashlight, elastics, candles, fans and small motors. Please ask your child how these simple items work.

We were fortunate to have both CLP and Entrack come to school to talk to the students.  CLP focused their presentation on fossil fuels and the creation of carbon dioxide. Entrack is a company that provides a real time energy monitoring system that all of ESF uses. The students can look at the hourly energy consumption at the school in different areas of the school and compare them day to day and week to week.

The students have started their own personal inquiries into a renewable and nonrenewable energy source.

Students will be inquiring into…

  1. What is it?
  2. Where is it used and who uses it?
  3. What are the pros and cons of using it? What is the impact to the planet, people and animals.

Students are required to find AT LEAST 3 facts from 3 different sources.

For Literacy this week we have been looking at inferring and visualizing skills. Inferring is deducing or concluding something from evidence and reasoning rather than from an explicit statement. Helping students understand how to infer will help to improve their skills in drawing conclusions and making inferences. These skills are needed in reading, science and social studies. Inferential thinking is a complex skill that will develop over time and with experience.

In Maths we will be specifically looking at Fractions. We will be investigating into the relationship and converting between common fractions, decimal fractions and percentages. We will be finding percentages of numbers or quantities with and without a calculator. We will be looking at simplifying fractions in mental and written form and converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa. Students will also be solving problems involving addition and subtraction of common fractions with the same or related denominators.

SPORTS DAY

Due to poor air quality Sports Day has been postponed until a later date.

NGO DAY – Most Y6’s from all of the ESF schools participated in finding out more about different non profit organizations here in Hong Kong with the hope of finding their passion for the Exhibition.  The students attended 3 sessions on Friday and collected some very good information about each of their NGO’s.
