Yr6 Weekly Update – 03/10/17

Where We are in Place and Time

UNIT OF INQUIRY & LITERACY

We are continuing to work on our Historical Narratives ensuring that the historical facts we gained from our Kowloon Walled City Park field trip are included in our writing.

Some classes have put together their KWC data in a poster format in order to summarize all of the information they gained on the trip.

Students will need to include part of the information from the trip and all of the features of a narrative, which include the following:

Orientation or setting which gives the background to the story

An element of suspense introduced by a complication or a problem.

It has a resolution which tells how the main character or characters confront the problem and resolve it.

We have researched the UNESCO site as to what their criteria is for choosing something as a heritage site to be conserved. We then put those 10 criteria into our own words and will use them to help with the task of choosing something to conserve in Hong Kong.

After we have chosen something from Hong Kong, which ranged in ideas from Dim Sum to Pill Boxes, students are putting the skill of evaluation into practice. Students will be justifying their reasons for wanting to conserve that piece of Hong Kong Heritage using criteria that was created in each class. When the students have finished researching and writing about it they will create a site on Tourbuilder to display all of their knowledge.

MATHS

March 14th is “Pi” Day and Y6 will be having an exciting day of math! We will start the day by heading over to  KGV for an exciting day of math games, fashion shows and more! Check out this awesome website for more info. www.kjsmaths.weebly.com

Our day will look like this.

8:45am – students will head to KGV to take part in different math activities.

10:25am – Fashion Parade – Students are encouraged to dress up in any sort of math theme! If they are not dressing up they need to be wearing their school uniform.

10:50am – “Pi” Day Bake Off – Students are encouraged to bake a pie to be judged by the Food Technology teachers at KGV! Students will be judged on taste, presentation and “Pi” Factor.

On Thursday March 16th, 10 student volunteers from each Y6 class will help to run a math fair at Sarah Roe. Thank you to the KJS students who were risk-takers and volunteered their time and expertise! Stay tuned for some exciting pics!

In math this unit students will be working with the Shape and Space strand. Students will be learning to:

  • identify, describe, classify and visualize properties of circles using mathematical vocabulary
  • visualise, describe, draw and model two-dimensional representations of three-dimensional objects and vice versa
  • Identify and use scale (ratio) to reduce and enlarge 2D shapes
  • Transform, reduce and enlarge 3D objects
  • Describe and model congruency and similarity in 3D objects

FAUST PERFORMANCE:

As the great man once said….’All the world’s a Stage and all the men and women merely players’.

KJS Y6 students were fortunate to have the Faust performers at school on Thursday to introduce a selection of Shakespeare’s works in an authentic an accessible way for them to enjoy.

The actors used Shakespeare’s Tragedies, Comedies and Histories including Romeo and Juliet, The Taming of the Shrew, Macbeth, The Merchant of Venice, Hamlet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream! The students really enjoyed the show!

ART:

We are fortunate to have started Art lessons with Mr. MacArthur on Friday’s for the next 4 weeks. Students will be focusing on many different skills that will help them with their work during the Exhibition.

SCHOOL FAIR

Students we need your help!

The school fair is fast approaching! On Saturday 18th March between 11:30 and 4:30 the school fair will take place at KJS. The Y6 team and students are excited about the games that we have created, but, we need YOUR help! Students need to choose a half hour time slot  to volunteer at the Y6 stall during the day. Students can sign up in pairs or groups of 4 with their friends. Please encourage your student to take action and sign up. Sign up sheets will be shared by the classroom teacher.

STUDENT LED CONFERENCES

Student Led Conferences will be held after school on March 23rd and throughout the day on March 24th. These conferences are part of your child’s learning journey and allow each child to talk through their learning. This is a time for your child to be celebrating their learning not a time for a parent teacher conference.  Please register for a time as you will be spending an hour in school with your child, starting in their classroom and then moving to their specialist teachers.

THE EXHIBITION

All Y6 parents are invited and encouraged to attend a coffee morning at 8.45 am on Monday 20th March to learn more about the upcoming PYP Exhibition. The Exhibition is the culmination of the six years that the children have spent working within the PYP framework and is an extremely important process.

Students will be journalling throughout their entire Exhibition process. Journals will be provided for students, however, if they would like to go and purchase their own, please do so. Journals should be at least 50 pages and no smaller than A4 size.

OTHER NOTES:

Raffle tickets are being sold and we are very impressed by the students’ motivation! There are prizes for the girl, the boy and the class who sell the most tickets. Please contact the PTA office should you need more raffle tickets to sell! If you have not returned yours yet please do so ASAP!

We would love any donations of outdoor/garden furniture, natural rope, bamboo, indoor/outdoor plants and pots, wood offcuts and wooden pallets for the Sky Garden.
