Yr6 Weekly Update – 03/17/17

Where We are in Place and Time

Some of the great pies and cakes baked by Y6 for Pi day!

MATHS – March 14th was Pi Day!

It was a fantastic day for all students involved! We started our day at KGV taking part in a Kahoot which is composed of several different math challenges! Students were put into small groups of 4-6 with the Y7 KGV students and solved many different types of math problems!

We then had the Fashion Parade.  Students did a great job of being creative and dressing up in many different math themes!

KJS students brought 29 different kinds of cakes, pies, cookies and cupcakes to the Pie Day Bake Off! Most of the winners were from KJS and they were all very tasty! Well done to all the KJS students for their enthusiasm and participation!

On Wednesday and Thursday afternoon Y6 and Y5 students created their own math games and then swapped with each other to try them out. We had many variations and modifications of Monopoly, Snakes and Ladders, card games, and games we play on SumDog.

Thank you to all of the Y6 volunteers who went to Jockey Club Sarah Roe to help run a maths day for their students. It was a great opportunity to be risk takers and provide help for other students.

ART

Students are working with Mr. McArthur for 4 weeks to learn some techniques and skills in art. Last week we focused on how to paint with watercolours using a wash, how to blend colours, and how to paint in monochromatic colours. The students were able to test their ability at all of these techniques and did a great job.

TRANSDISCIPLINARY LEARNING

The IB states that the PYP focuses on transdisciplinary learning because it conveys  learning that has relevance across the subject areas and more importantly, learning that transcends the confines of the subject areas to connect to what is real in the world.

This week students have been focusing on connecting literacy and their unit work. They have done this by using what they learned about the Kowloon Walled City and their own research, and connecting it to their narrative writing to describe what it was like to visit, live or work there. The students are starting to paint some really graphic pictures with words to tell their stories of what it was like.

THE EXHIBITION

Y6 parents are invited to a coffee morning at 8.45am on Monday 20th March to learn more about the upcoming PYP Exhibition. The Exhibition is the culmination of the six years that the children have spent working within the PYP framework and is an extremely important process.  As we know some parents will be unable to attend we will make sure the key points from the presentation are shared with you.

**Please make sure if your student is bringing in their own Exhibition journal, that it is at school by Monday March 20th! Students not using their own will be given one by their class teacher.

STUDENT LED CONFERENCES

Thursday March 23rd – 3:00pm – 6:00pm

Friday March 24th – All day – no regular school for students.

This is a very important day for you and your student to share in their learning journey. Please make sure you have signed up for an appointment time on Gateway.

The purpose of the student led conferences is for each student to demonstrate their ownership of their learning, to inform you as parents of your student’s learning journey to date and to discover what they find challenging and what they want to celebrate. It will also give you as parents a flavour of the work your student experiences in their class each day.

MIXED BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

Congratulations to all of the Y6’s who participated in the Mixed Team basketball tournament on Friday at KJS. All students did a great job of being enthusiastic and demonstrating good sportsmanship. Well done KJS!
