Yr6 Weekly Update – 03/24/17

The Exhibition – How We Express Ourselves

Student Led Conferences

Thank you to all of the parents for taking part in your child’s learning during our Student Led Conferences. The entire school was alive with the busy conversations around learning. Watching empowered students sharing with their parents all they have learned is a reminder that children should always be given agency in their learning, with the adults in their lives nudging them along in the right direction.  We hope that you found this interesting and informative and that it gave you some insight as to what goes on each day at school. Well done to all of the Y6 students who did a great job of demonstrating so many skills while showing their learning.

The time has come, the time is now… The exhibition has begun!

Thank you to all of the parents who came to the Exhibition information session at the beginning of the week and for those of you who completed your home learning on the Padlet! It was great to see what you as parents think!

We kicked off the week by introducing the students to the United Nations Global Goals. There are 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development. If these goals are completed, it would mean an end to extreme poverty, inequality and climate change by 2030.

As teachers, we decided to make the 17 goals more manageable and broke them down into 6 different categories. Poverty, Health and Well Being, Education, Skills and Jobs, A Safe and Fair World, and Sustainability. Each class was then introduced to these by attending mini sessions organized by each class teacher. Students should now be able to explain what the Global Goals are, why they are important and how they relate to them as a learner. We hope this has created some discussion and buzz at home. Our next step will be to sort out all of this information so that students can find what they are truly passionate about, find others who share the same passion, get into their teams and then start the exhibition process.

Visiting Author – David Schwartz

On Wednesday we were lucky to see a presentation by Author David Schwartz who makes math fun by writing books about numbers and nature! He has written several books such as How Much is a Million, Millions to Measure, Go is for Googol and Q is for Quark. For the Y6 interactive presentation the students needed to stretch their minds and tackled some BIG math problems involving popcorn and stars! If students are interested in buying any of his books they can be found on  www.BookDepository.com

These girls from 6T took action and showed David Schwartz the class book they created at the beginning of the year which was modelled on his book “How Much is a Million?”

Students in each Y6 class were put into groups, and had to create a problem such as if I had 1 million water bottles stacked on top of eachother how high could they reach? Mr. Schwartz was really impressed with their work! Great action girls!

ESF Anniversary Choir

Congratulations to the students who participated in the ESF choir last week for the 50th year celebration. They sang at Queen Elizabeth Stadium and sang several songs in a few different languages. They sang an African song called Si Njay Njay, a Swahili song called Wakati Wa Amani, which means a time of peace, When I Grow up from Matilda, and A Little Jazz Mass. A great collaboration by all of those involved!
