Yr6 Weekly Update – 03/31/17

How We Express Ourselves – The Exhibition

PYPX – 2017

We have finished our second week of the Exhibition and the students have been tuning in and finding out what their passions are and what inspires them! We finished finding out about the 17 Global Goals and then we narrowed them down to the top three choices with evidence as to why they were inspiring.

The students self-assessed their skills, attitudes and attributes to find out what their strengths and challenges are. Then they took their choice for their Global Goal and their self assessments and made an informed choice for a balanced exhibition group with different students who had different strengths and weaknesses.

After students formed their groups, they came up with a Freeze Frame, a slogan and a logo to demonstrate their Global Goal. We are off to a great start here in Y6!

For the Exhibition we will be using the Solution Fluency model to help students through the exhibition process. Over the holidays we would like the students to DEFINE what a potential issue/ problem is and come up with some evidence. It could be in the form of pictures, interviews, or some research they have done. They will be required to share their findings with their group when they return to school.

PARENTS: We also want to know what your passions are in terms of the United Nations Global Goals. Are you an expert in any of these areas? Do you have any connections to local or global organizations that can help the students to better understand the goals or how to take age appropriate action.

Some classes have started to use their Exhibition Process Journals. The students will be required to write in these journals each week.  They will be writing down a lot of their reflections, ideas, decisions and actions as well as the work they have been engaged in and how their understanding of the issue is developing and progressing.

These journals will be read, commented on and assessed by the class teachers.

LITERACY

Students continued with their Historical Narratives this week. A historical narrative is a way of telling a story of a historical time or event through a narrative. It can be written through the eyes of a fictional character or even as the story of a real person from history who experienced the event. The key to a successful historical narrative is providing an engaging story without distorting the facts, ensuring there is lots of details, dialogue and proper punctuation. The Y6 students have really enjoyed writing these stories.

MATHS

In maths this week, students have been sorting  and classifying different sets of shapes in as many ways as possible. Some of the ways the students came up with sorting for, were, angles, parallel lines, and lines of symmetry as well as regular and irregular shapes.

We have also discussed what ‘congruent’ means and we inquired into the question of, “ If you draw a diagonal line on any rectangle you will always get 2 congruent triangles”. The students were then asked to prove that statement to be true or false. This created a lot of really great discussion in our classes.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Well done to our Y6 Photo contest winners. We had several entries and all were very good and demonstrated many of the techniques that Mrs. Darling had taught us. Here are our top 3 winners! Thank you to all who participated.
