Yr6 Weekly Update – 04/28/17

How We Express Ourselves – The Exhibition

The Exhibition is in full swing this week and we started the week by continuing to narrow down and define our problem. Then looking into the causation or the reasons for their issue. Students should be finding both qualitative and quantitative data to help support their findings. They should also be looking how they can make a connection of their Global Goal to Hong Kong.

Our Mentors started on Tuesday and the students used an Elevator Pitch to tell their Mentors about their issue. Thank you to all of the teachers and parents who came in to support us this week. If you are interested, please let your child’s teacher know and we can set up a time for you to come in to help out.

Next, the students will be looking to make local connections to their issues and then looking into how they can take action to help solve those issues.

Students should be starting to think about what kind of ACTION they can take for their exhibition issue. Please talk to your child and find out what they are thinking about.

PYPX Logo Competition

Thank you to all of the Y6’s who demonstrated their creativity and handed in an entry for the PYPX Logo Competition for 2017. Congratulations to Maahi from 6T and Hayley from 6RB who won the Logo Competition for this years PYPX.  Stay tuned to see their logo on the T-shirts this year.

Maths

In maths this week we are continuing with ratios by reading, writing and solving problems. Next week we will begin to estimate, compare, measure and construct angles within shapes. Students will also be interpreting and drawing conclusions from statistical data using range, mode, median and mean and scale on graphs.

Art

This is our last week in art with Mr. McArthur. The students have demonstrated an understanding of basic color theory and the color wheel; understand primary, secondary, tertiary, analogous, complementary, neutral, warm, cool, and monochromatic color schemes.

They have also demonstrated an awareness of the properties of color relationships in a painting by attempting the following during their art lessons.

  • Mix and blend colors to create a special effect or mood in a painting.
  • Use tints and shades to create gradation, contrast or harmony.
  • Create a monochromatic painting that has a range of value.
  • Use complementary colors when color mixing.
  • Use complementary colors next to one another to create energy in a painting.
  • Explore abstraction with a variety of painting media.

Students used the following tools and techniques in order to create their art.

  • Use thick brush to create a variety of brush strokes. Use thin brush to create a variety of brush strokes.
  • Use brushes to create washes and blends.
  • Mix thick paint (textured) / Mix thin paint (watercolour)
