Yr6 Weekly Update – 09/9/16

An exciting time for the people of Hong Kong with the elections last weekend. Some students even went along with their parents to the polling stations when they went to vote. A perfect time for the Y6 students to be inquiring into the structure and function of governing systems!! This week we welcomed Dr Ed Wickins – Executive Principal of the KLC (Kowloon Learning Campus) into our Y6 classrooms to talk about key features of the KLC. The students learned lots of new names and what roles people do and also what the difference between governors and leaders is.

In English this week a focus has been writing ‘burnable’ and ‘non-burnable’ student questions. Ask your child what questions they have so far about our unit of inquiry. In some classes students gave each other oral feedback on their question. We have been continuing to watch the cartoon version of George Orwell’s Animal Farm and identifying leadership styles and their impact on the animals.

With a continued focus in maths on the Place Value system, the students have used a variety of manipulatives to show their understanding of how numbers are organized. In some classes they have gone further to design their own chart and recording system. Doubling and halving the number of votes candidates received for the Legco elections has been a context for students to practice their mental strategies this week.

An image in the SCMP this week gave the students a starting point for an investigation of ‘How long?’ or ‘How high?’ or ‘How far’? using big numbers and a context of their choice. ‘How long is 1,000 1 dollar coins?’ ‘How long would it take to write my name 1 million times?’
