Yr6 Weekly Update – 26/8/16

The end of Week 2 already! The week started in Y6 with the announcing of our House Captains and Vice Captains. Congratulations to the elected students and also well done to everyone who was courageous in putting themselves forward to be voted for. These are just two of many opportunities that Y6 will be given in their final year at KJS. During our first unit of inquiry under the theme ‘How we organize ourselves’ there will an opportunity to be on the student council and from that group, a girl and a boy will be elected as Co-chairs. Please encourage your child to make the most of this opportunity.

This week we have been revisiting the term ‘Growth Mindset’. What does having a growth mindset mean?  What does it feel like to be in the ‘panic zone’? How are you going to get out of there? What does it feel like to be in the ‘learning zone’? What kind of words would you hear someone say when they are in the ‘comfort zone’? Ask your child these questions – parents, do YOU have a growth mindset?

In Literacy this week we have been talking and writing about the PYP Attitudes. Students were asked to choose an attitude and write about a personal experience when they feel they showed that attitude. Some classes have taken this further and written a story. In art we have been using the style of Keith Haring to create a painting to represent one of the attitudes.

In Maths this week we have been assessing the prior knowledge of Place Value including decimals and negative numbers. The Olympic Games have continued to be the context for some lessons. Amazing how podium finishes have come down to a few hundredths!!
