Yr6 Weekly Update – 30/9/16

Dear parents

We’d like to congratulate the Y6 girls and boys who played in the football tournament last weekend at KGV. A very hot, but enjoyable morning was had by all. The students showed good skills and all worked well as part of their teams- a great effort!

Another busy week in Year 6. As part of our unit of inquiry the students have been carrying out some personal inquiry. Each class has been using a different inquiry cycle e.g. Kath Murdoch’s or Charles Bruner’s with a view to evaluating the different stages and deciding if any parts need to be added or omitted. This is part of the preparation for our Exhibition at the end of May next year. The students has been inquiring into the responsibilities of citizens and leaders within various governing systems. They have worked collaboratively by sharing good resources and also sharing information they have found.

In English this week students have been continuing to deconstruct persuasive pieces of writing to identify language features and ‘magpieing’ useful words and phrases to be used in their own persuasive pieces. The students have used their persuasive writing skills when thinking about ‘Do mobile devices have a place within the school day?’ or ‘What law should the newly formed Legco pass first?’

In Maths we have been partitioning and renaming large numbers and decimals. We have also been ordering decimals and the students have enjoyed playing games such as ‘spiraling decimals’ where the winner is the first person to place 3 decimals in a row. The students have been constructing infographics using large numbers and also analyzing data in detail such as UV intensity at different times of the day in HK.
