You did it!

We achieved an 84.11% response rate to our survey about the year past and the year ahead. This was the best response rate in recent history! Thank you so much for taking the time to have your say. Now the work begins: to look at the trends and themes, to compare feedback from parents, staff, children and the School Council, and create a plan for the year ahead that is responsive to feedback and aligned with our strategic goals. I will provide you with more detail before the end of the year once comprehensive analysis is complete.

As you know this Thursday is a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) day for staff. Our focus on Thursday is two fold:

  1. Review the units of inquiry taught this year and consider feedback from staff and students;
  2. Plan an even more successful programme of inquiry for the year ahead.

As a PYP school, we are committed to ensuring your children have the joy of engaging in meaningful and authentic learning experiences which will enhance their agency, wellbeing and academic progress. We will be working extremely hard to enhance the connections between our specialist teaching programmes (Chinese, Music and PE) and classroom learning. In your feedback to us, you were emphatic about the importance of the wellbeing of your children, embedding the AAROW’s of Success and improving literacy and maths through our inquiry approach. Successful outcomes from our CPD day will include a comprehensive review of the learning this year, planned enhancements for the year ahead, detail of our wellbeing units (especially during the first two weeks of school) and planning for our important swap over day on 24 June, where children meet their new teacher for the year ahead. We will be working hard!

On a final note, our Year 6 students are making plans to change the world through their PYPX. Please keep your eye out for their messages in this newsletter, via social media and special notices in the weeks ahead. Let’s empower our children to take action and use their agency to make our world a better place!

Kind regards

Neill O’Reilly

Year 5 Market Day

The annual Year 5 Market Day will take place on 12 June.

Children from Years 3, 4 and 6 are invited to bring in some money to spend at Market Day on the products and services made by our year 5 students. We ask that you send in an absolute maximum of $100 per child.

The profits made from Market Day will be donated to a local NGO, which will be chosen by the students at a later date.

Thank you for your support.

Message from our Y6 students

Parina and Harshitha:

Our names are Parina and Harshitha and we are in year 6. Our year 6 exhibition and passion is all about global goal #15, life on land, animal welfare. Our exhibition inquiry is all about Hong Kong’s problem with stray and abandoned dogs. We want to find out what can be done to help our furry friends!

One action we would like to take is to organise a ‘dog’ drive. We would like to ask the KJS community to support us by donating items for dogs that we can give to animals shelters around Hong Kong.

The items we will be collecting are: machine washable blankets and bedding, dog/puppy food, puppy pads, water bowls, dog toys, collars, blankets, dog leads, dog beds, dog soap and shampoo, and other basic grooming supplies.

Please drop your donations outside the ground floor office anytime.

We will begin collecting donations starting tomorrow. Donations will be sent to shelters on 21 June.

Thank you for your support!

Praneel Chatlani:

My name is Praneel Chatlani from 6L and for my PYP exhibition I want to take action in overconsumption.

 Your old Toys…

Please if you have any old toys please donate them In the box next to the office so I can redistribute them  to charities in Hong Kong.

The box will be available from the 10th of June to 17th of June 2019

Thank you

Library News – Library Book Return Date and NURTURE Book Collection

Library Book Return Date

As the library is preparing for the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Library Renovation this summer, we would like to conduct an inventory count of our existing books. As such, we kindly request that all library books be returned to us by Friday 14 June 2019.

Students can continue to enjoy reading books online with ebooks listed in the Library Splat page. Please note that Wheelers and Tumblebooks are KJS subscribed digital libraries and can be accessed for free. EPIC requires a subscription and it’s optional for families to join.

Philippine Book Collection – Thursday 25 June 2019

KJS is happy to continue collecting books for NURTURE organization. All books collected by 25 June will be shipped to the Philippines to rebuild school libraries affected by Typhoon Mangkhut. With your help, we have already rebuilt 7 school libraries and have helped the lives of hundreds of children.
